Volvo Margarete Rose

Like the Volvo Philip, the Margarete Rose was a one-off concept car introduced in 1953. It was a potential replacement for the 1944 PV444 series, which comprised old Volvo car models with a unibody design.

Nevertheless, Volvo incorporated some of this concept car's design elements into the Amazon. This masterpiece's solid build and timeless appeal make it one of the best Volvos ever made.

Volvo Concept Recharge

Volvo rolled out the Concept Recharge in the summer of 2021, showcasing its focus on autonomous technology and sustainability. Although this isn't Volvo's first electric prototype, it's a manifesto for its all-electric future. Therefore, most or some of its design elements will likely be featured in Volvo's future cars. 

Volvo Concept 40.1 and 40.2

Volvo presented Concept 40.1 and 40.2 in 2016. These iconic Volvo cars flaunted the company's Compact Modular Architecture platform, which allows for the development of premium smaller models. 

The Concept 40.1 was perceived as a preview of the 2025 Volvo XC40, a versatile city companion with advanced safety features. 

On the other hand, the Concept 40.2 was initially seen as a potential V40 successor. However, its design laid the foundation for the 2019 Polestar 2, which some might say is the best Volvo ever. 

Volvo Concept Coupé

Revealed in 2013, the Volvo Concept Coupé was a design showcase for the manufacturer's future car models. It influenced the XC90, the Polestar 1, and the 2023 Volvo C60 coupé.

Volvo Your Concept Car

An all-women design team developed the Volvo Your Concept Car (YCC), which Volvo unveiled in 2004. The brand never intended to produce it as a model. Instead, it was a showcase of its innovative ideas and efforts toward creating user-centric vehicles. 

Some of its unique features were replaceable seat cushions, a lockable compartment, and storage spaces in doorframes. The Volvo YCC came with the Ergovision system, too. This patented concept personalized the driver's position, regardless of their height. 

Volvo T6 Roadster 

Presented in 2005, this Volvo roadster was a classic. Various Volvo models, including the PV444, C70, and S60, inspired its bodywork. 

However, unlike most Volvo concept cars, the manufacturer didn't design the T6 Roadster. Leif Tufvesson, a former Volvo employee, built it in his garage.

Volvo Experimental Safety Car

Volvo unveiled the Volvo Experimental Safety Car in 1972 to test innovative safety technology. This concept car foreshadowed the arrival of the 1974 Volvo 240, which was arguably one of the best Volvos of all time.

The 240 was the world's first vehicle to feature a Lambda sensor and a catalytic converter. Impressively, the production of this Volvo square car spanned 19 years, making it a massive success for the manufacturer. 

Gaps and Forgotten Concepts 

Volvo has explored many car concepts over the decades. Unfortunately, some have fallen through the cracks with time due to various factors, including their lack of production feasibility. 

For example, the Volvo Tundra, a Bertone-designed concept car, didn't make it to production. Volvo rejected the prototype, deeming it too modern. The manufacturer anticipated that selling models based on the Tundra would be challenging. 

Another Volvo concept car that has faded into obscurity is the 1980 Volvo Viking. It was just a short-lived design study that didn't influence future Volvo models.
