The Volvo EX90

The EX90 is a new model, built on an updated version of the SPA platform that underpins the Volvo CX90. Its introduction as Volvo's flagship SUV is part of the automaker's commitment to a fully electric future. It's the first Volvo model equipped with a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor, powered by NVIDIA DRIVE, and the first to feed power back to the grid with bidirectional charging.

The Rivian R1S

The Rivian R1S has a rugged and modern appearance. Stadium-shaped headlights and front and rear light bars punctuate its boxy silhouette. It's larger than the Volvo EX90 with a length, width, and height of 200.8 inches, 82 inches, and 77.3 inches, respectively. It has nine different exterior colors, but only LA Silver comes standard, with the rest costing extra.

Interior and Comfort

Both the Volvo EX90 and Rivian R1S can accommodate seven passengers comfortably. However, the EX90’s middle row can be adjusted to two individual seats with armrests and cupholders. This option lowers the capacity to six but improves comfort and convenience.

The R1S has a maximum cargo capacity of 90.7 cubic feet — higher than the EX90’s 67.6 cubic feet. Its frunk is also larger, at 11.1 cubic feet compared to the EX90’s 1.2 cubic feet. The EX90 does, however, offer an additional 2.2 cubic feet of underfloor storage, and front and rear passengers can enjoy more headroom and hip room. 

Known for comfortable, upscale interiors, the Rivian R1S’ perforated seats, wood accents, and bronze finishes enhance that premium feel. Entering and exiting are also made easy with adjustable air suspension. Other features include heated seats and steering wheel, ventilated power front seats with memory, LED ambient lighting, and a glass sunroof. 

The 2025 Volvo EX90’s cabin impresses with its elegant Scandinavian design, evident in features such as a button-free dashboard, charcoal-tailored dash and panels, genuine wood detail, and Nordico Quilted or Tailored Wool Blend upholstery. It also offers natural interior lighting, an air purifier, a tinted panoramic roof, and laminated windows. Standard features on higher trims include a four-zone climate system, a heated steering wheel, heated seats with cushion extensions, and power front seats with lumbar support.

Performance and Efficiency

The 2025 Volvo EX90 is equipped with a fully electric dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain. The Twin Motor engine delivers 402 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque, while the more powerful Twin Motor Performance engine produces 510 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque. Both engines can tow up to 4,850 pounds. The EX90 has an EPA-estimated range of up to 310 miles, and its battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes with DC fast charging.

The 2025 Rivian R1S offers the option of a Dual-Motor, Tri-Motor, or Quad-Motor engine, all of which have a higher power output than the EX90. The Quad-Motor setup is particularly impressive, delivering 1,025 horsepower, 1,198 lb-ft of torque, and a 0-to-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds. The R1S features AWD and a maximum tow rating of 7,700 pounds. Its EPA-estimated top range is 410 miles, with a charging time from 10% to 80% of 30 to 40 minutes. 

Technology and Features

The Volvo EX90 has two high-resolution displays: a 9-inch driver information center and a 14.5-inch central touch screen. Notable standard infotainment and connectivity features include 5G capability, Bluetooth connectivity, Google services, SiriusXM radio, navigation, a 14-speaker Bose Premium Sound System, wireless charging, and USB-C ports.

The Rivian R1S features a 12.3-inch driver display and a 15.6-inch infotainment display. It also comes with USB-C ports, navigation, and wireless charging. 

Safety and Driver Assistance

The EX90 comes with Volvo's Safe Space Technology, a suite of safety features that includes a LiDAR sensor, a driver-understanding system, autonomous driving, and occupant sensing. Other features include collision avoidance, lane-keeping aid, run-off road mitigation, cross-traffic alert with auto brake, a blind-spot information system, a surround-view camera, and a 13.2-inch head-up display.

Rivian has equipped the R1S with more than 20 standard safety features. These include a system of cameras, radars, and sensors to help prevent accidents and make driving more seamless. Other features are dynamic brake assist, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, collision warning, parking assist, lane departure warning, and cross-traffic alert.
